Logan Combs
M.S. student
Email: combsl1@unlv.nevada.edu
Education:
B.S. in geology, University of Tennessee, Knoxville (2014)
Research interests:
Logan is primarily interested in what the application of igneous petrology and planetary science can tell us about the formation and evolution of planetary bodies in our Solar System. In his current master’s thesis research, Logan applies his knowledge of these fields to the study of a new member of a rare group of martian meteorites, the geochemically enriched poikilitic shergottites. Goals of this project include providing a comprehensive description of this new meteorite, constraining the formation processes of this rare meteorite group, and examining their link to other martian meteorites. He makes use of petrographic microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe analysis, and mass spectrometry to meet the goals of this study. Logan’s broader interests include understanding one of the most dynamic bodies in our Solar System, Earth. In the future, he would like to pursue projects that incorporate the subjects of structural geology and metamorphic petrology.
